Announcing the 2013 TRIUMPHANT Honorees

Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada is pleased to announce our 2013 TRIUMPHANT: Celebrating Women in Leadership honorees. The five outstanding women leaders represent the five focus areas of Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada:

Environmental Leadership: Karen Abowd, Carson City Supervisor/Co-Owner Adele’s

A graduate of UNR, Ms. Abowd is the founder of The Greenhouse Project, which operates on the campus of Carson High School. The Greenhouse Project is a non-profit teaching facility and hands-on training program that emphasize environmental stewardship, the importance of outdoor activity, civic engagement and academic achievement.

Healthy Living: Wendy Damonte, Anchor KTVN Channel 2 News

Ms. Damonte promotes healthy living through her “Health Watch”, “Ask the Doctor” and “Remind Me To” segments on Channel 2 news. She supports our community through her work as Chair of the Susan G. Komen Foundation and is a UNR graduate and President of the UNR Alumni Association. She also volunteers her time with the American Heart Association and the Boys & Girls Club.

STEM: Mercedes de la Garza AIA, Principal, Mercedes de la Garza Architect Studio

Ms. de la Garza received her Master of Architecture, Design and Theory at the University of California, Los Angeles. She serves on many community boards and advisory boards, is the City of Reno Historic Resources Commissioner and served as the City of Reno Arts and Culture Commissioner from 2002-2009.

Community Service: Mary Fischer, Founder, G.R.O.W.

Ms. Fischer graduated from the University of Colorado and is the founder of GROW (Gardeners Reclaiming Our Waysides), a non-profit organization whose mission is to raise funds to enhance highway projects through landscaping and artwork. Through her grass-roots effort, over $2.2 million was raised for the beautification of the Carson City freeway with landscaping and artwork illustrating Carson City’s history.

Financial Literacy: Laura Zander, Founder, Jimmy Beans Wool

Jimmy Beans, a yarn and fabric retailer, is a market leader in its multi-billion dollar industry and is responsible for the national industry-wide Stitch Red campaign against heart disease in women. Her company has been named five times to the Inc. magazine’s “5,000 Fastest Growing Private Companies in the US” and she has been recognized as one of Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneurial Winning Women as well as Woman Owned Business of the Year by the Nevada Small Business Administration. She has a Master’s degree in Political Science from Washington State University.
