CAMP WASIU II - SUMMER RESIDENT CAMP ANNOUNCEMENT Our community volunteer board of directors has made the tough decision to postpone the summer resident camp program at Camp Wasiu II during the 2009 summer season. After reviewing our increasing expenses, a sharp downturn in projected revenues, and to make the necessary improvements to Camp Wasiu II, the decision to postpone resident camp was made in order for the Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada to remain fiscally strong for all girls. In lieu of our resident camp program, Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada will add new program offerings and maintain the well-loved summer day camps this summer as an alternative option. While we understand some disappointment may be felt about not attending a formal camp program at Camp Wasiu II, we feel confident we can provide a myriad of fun, safe and affordable camp experiences this summer for our girls, while we make Camp Wasiu II even better. We will have a full slate of programs the girls can participate in throughout the year including the NEW summer adventure series. In making all changes we will focus on the best leadership opportunities we can provide for the 9,000 Girl Scout members. OVERVIEW OF CHANGES: 1. Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada will be introducing a new and exciting summer series of level specific outdoor programming entitled Summer Adventure Series throughout the council during the 2009 summer as an alternative option for girls. The series will focus on the progressive steps of outdoor education to encourage girls to explore a variety of opportunities.
2. In addition, we will be continuing our very successful summer day camps in Reno and Elko. 3. We have also partnered with Girl Scouts of Northern California, Girl Scouts Heart of Central California, and Girl Scouts of Utah councils to make available resident camp programming as an additional alternative for the 2009 summer. Making Camp Wasiu even better! Based on careful review of camp facilities, grant commitments and most importantly, member feedback, Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada will be upgrading and improving camp facilities with grant funding received.
Q&A Why is Camp Wasiu II closing for the 2009 summer? Please see primary statement. Will Camp Wasiu II be open for resident camp in the summer of 2010? All Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada properties are being reviewed by a board-appointed property task force, and all property decisions will be made by the Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada Volunteer Board of Directors. We will ask for troop input before we make our decisions. We anticipate that our plans to upgrade the property and further fundraising as well as the Girl Scout Cookie Sale this year will be successful. What is being offered to the girls for outdoor programming in place of resident camp? Please see overview of changes. What upgrades are being made at Camp Wasiu II? Based on careful review of camp facilities, grant commitments and most importantly, member feedback, Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada will be upgrading and improving camp facilities which may include property clean-up, upgrade/improvement of facilities and adding new camp amenities. Will Camp Wasiu II still be available for service unit camporee’s during this summer? An important note for Girl Scout members and the community to know is that the camp facilities will be available for rental and we look forward to offering a premier facility at reasonable costs, which will generate important revenue for the Girl Scouts.
