Info for Girls & Families
Why Girl Scout Cookies?
With every season of Girl Scout Cookies, another generation of girls learns to set goals, make a plan, and decide where their money goes. As women, they will need these skills, whether their goal is to start a business or a family. In fact, if you ask many of today’s successful businesswomen, they’ll tell you that they once sold Girl Scout cookies, too!
The cookie program is the number one financial literacy program for girls. It helps young women practice valuable life skills all while having fun with their friends.
Families play a very important role
Remember that the Girl Scout Cookie Program is a part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, which is completely girl-driven. Let your Girl Scout take the lead in selling cookies and reaching her goals.
Your encouragement, coaching, and guidance are the key ingredients to a successful Cookie Program experience for her.

Help her set goals
Don’t forget to visit ABC’s website to:
- Set goals. Setting a goal is one of the most important steps in the cookie activity. Having a goal also gives you and your troop energy and an incentive to work just a little bit harder than you thought you could.
- Create an account using COCO (Cookie Command Center). This is where girls can collaborate, plan and practice their marketing skills all while helping to support their fellow sisters in their Girl Scout troop.
- Download free clip art using Flickr to create their own marketing fliers, signs and other marketing materials that can be used during the cookie season.
The five skills
All girls who participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Program are eligible to earn the annual Cookie Activity Pin. This pin recognizes the five skills learned and practiced along the way:
- Goal Setting
- Decision Making
- Money Management
- People Skills
- Business Ethics
Girls can collect a different colored pin every year to recognize growth in these five skill areas. After she earns the pin, each girl should be able to discuss how she has earned it.
What will she learn at each level of Girl Scouting with the Cookie Program?
As a Girl Scout Daisy (grades K-1), they are learning how to speak up, speak clearly, speak respectfully, and they are beginning their skill of looking customers in the eye and being brave enough to ask a clear question.
As a Girl Scout Brownie (grades 2-3), they are being reminded that they can do anything they set their mind to. They are setting goals, and working toward them with a specific purpose.
As a Girl Scout Junior (grades 4-5), they are learning more about money and the foundations of supply and demand. They are working on their customer service, setting loftier goals, and earning respect with their business ethics.
As a Girl Scout Cadette (grades 6-8), they are starting to create their product sale into a business of their own. They are thinking outside the box when it comes to sales. They are traveling with the money that they earn, and know their specific goals.
As a Girl Scout Senior (grades 9-10), they are making their own decisions about who to sell to, and when to sell them. They have specific goals in mind on what they will use their profit for, and can articulate it very clearly to their customers.
As a Girl Scout Ambassador (grades 11-12), they now have their sights set on their future careers. These girls are using the cookie program to fund their travel as well as hone their business skills. By now, they’ve perfected their customer service skills, and understand business ethics. They decide how to run their business, and they do great things.
The safety and security of our members is our number one priority. Our council enforces strict guidelines for safety. Also, Girl Scouts, depending on their age, must be accompanied or supervised by an adult when selling Girl Scout cookies and must always use the buddy system – because it’s not just safe, it’s more fun!

Sure… the cookies taste good, but it is so much more than just a cookie.
The purchase of Girl Scout Cookies helps bring out the confidence in a girl. It is no easy thing to ask a stranger to buy something. She has to speak up, look them in the eye, and believe in what she’s doing. Most of all, she must whole-heartedly believe in herself.
All proceeds from our Cookie Program stay local. We want to thank each of you personally for helping to support your local girls as they strive toward their goals and look toward their future as confident and courageous women of character.
