SCOUTS MISSION STATEMENT:
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character,
who make the world a better place.
GIRL
SCOUTS OF THE SIERRA NEVADA VISION STATEMENT:
To be the preeminent
leadership development organization for girls.
PROGRAM:
Providing fun, motivational program is the heart of Girl Scouting.
The Girl Scout program encompass a wide range of activities and interests. The
underlying themes of leadership and self-development are carried
throughout the program, enabling girls to reach their full potential and
prepare themselves for the challenges that lie ahead.
FACILITIES:
The Girl
Scout Service Center is located in Reno, Nevada,
near downtown. The council operates Camp Wasiu II, a summer
resident camp near Sierra City, California as well as a field office
in Elko, Nevada.
In addition, the council also
leases Girl Scout houses in Winnemucca, Nevada and Bishop, California
and a primitive camp in Ely, Nevada.
HISTORY:
The Council was founded in 1936 - on
October 2006, the Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada celebrated 70 years of Girl Scouting in
northern Nevada and eastern California.
Nationally,
Girl Scouting has been part of American History for nearly
100 years.
JURISDICTION:
Girl Scouts
of the Sierra Nevada has a jurisdiction of over 90,000 square miles,
which includes 23 counties in northern Nevada and eastern California.
MEMBERSHIP:
The goal of Girl Scouts
of the Sierra Nevada is to make Girl Scouting available to every girl
(ages 5 to 17) who makes the Girl Scout Promise and accepts the Girl Scout
Law.
OUTREACH:
Through outreach
programs, Girl Scouting is accessible to all girls. Girl Scouting in the
School Day programs serve girls by meeting during the lunch hour or after
school. The council also has established collaborations with other youth
agencies, such as the Reno Housing Authority and Boys & Girls Clubs.
