GIRL SCOUT PROGRAM

 

MEMBERSHIP

A contemporary, informal education program, Girl Scouts offers girls ages 5-17 opportunities to discover the fun, friendship and power of girls together. Chartered by the Girl Scouts of the USA, Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada serves members in 23 counties throughout northern Nevada and eastern California. In 2007, one in every eleven girls served by our council called herself a Girl Scout!

PROGRAM ACTIVITIES & EVENTS

Girl Scouting helps girls discover, connect and take action with hundreds of different council-sponsored programs and events that meet the diverse interests and passions of girls. This past year, 3,134 girls and family members participated in 90 council-wide events. Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada concentrated on six leadership-building initiatives that are results-driven, including:

 

HEALTH AND WELLNESS /RESULTS

  • Girls develop self-knowledge and life skills to make healthy choices.

  • Girls implement strategies for staying physically active.

  • Girls develop a positive self-image, sound values and a strong social conscience.

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS /RESULTS

  • Girls become confident in developing skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and retain these as career options.

  • Girls set high educational and career goals.

  • Girls gain confidence in a supportive, hands-on, non-competitive environment.

THE ARTS /RESULTS

  • Girls enhance their creative expression through fine arts, music, dance, writing, film and other mediums.

  • Girls explore social issues, values and their roles in society.

  • Girls gain technical and creative skills.

TRAVEL /RESULTS

  • Girls travel to new places and have experiences they might not have otherwise.

  • Girls develop new skills and the confidence to meet people from different cultures.

  • Girls gain a sense of independence and world citizenship.

OUTDOOR AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION /RESULTS

  • Girls discover the natural world found in urban, suburban and rural areas.

  • Girls understand the science behind nature and wildlife conservation.

  • Girls become strong environmental stewards and participate in conservation projects.

FINANCIAL LITERACY /RESULTS

  • Girls learn how to earn, manage and invest money.

  • Girls make sound financial decisions regarding purchases, credit and savings.

  • Girls understand what it means to be financially independent and plan for their futures.
