GIRL SCOUT COOKIE SALE PROGRAM

WHY GIRL SCOUT COOKIES®?

Because selling cookies is fun for girls…and it's a great win-win activity:

  • Girl Scouts practice life skills, like goal setting, money management, and teamwork.

  • Customers get a great product and get to support girls in their own community.

  • All of the proceeds support Girl Scouting in the local community.

These activities are directly related to our purpose of helping all girls realize their full potential and become strong, confident and resourceful citizens.

WHAT YOU ARE REALLY BUYING:

The cookie proceeds  allows the Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada to provide the Girl Scout Program to every girl, everywhere. What the program gives back to the community are the girls with healthy self-esteem and confidence, enhancing decision-making and communication skills, strong values and a commitment to citizenship and public service.

Learning to set goals: a sense of purpose.

Money Handling: developing money management skills.

Speaking to customers: acquiring communication skills.

Cookie Shops: developing self-confidence and teamwork.

GIRL SCOUT COOKIE® HISTORY

Girl Scout Cookies® are a familiar part of American culture. For more than 90 years, Girl Scouts, with the enthusiastic support of their families, have helped ensure the success of local Girl Scout Cookie activities. From its earliest beginnings to its current popularity, Brownie, Junior, Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts who sell cookies have fun, develop valuable life skills and "make the world a better place" by helping to support Girl Scouting in their communities. Girls are proud that their efforts provide resources for their local Girl Scout councils and for their own Girl Scout troops/groups.

The cookie sale dates back to 1917 when Girl Scouts baked their own cookies and sold them from baskets to their neighbors. As membership in Girl Scouting grew, so did the cookie sale. In 1934, Philadelphia's council initiated the first documented council-wide sale of commercially baked cookies. Two years later, the first national cookie sale was held.
