THE UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA RENO’S MACKAY SCHOOL OF EARTH SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING AND GIRL SCOUTS OF THE SIERRA NEVADA PARTNER FOR BADGE WORKSHOP SERIES

The University of Nevada, Reno’s Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering and Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada (GSSN) have partnered for two virtual Badge Workshop Series on June 22 & 24, 2021. Both workshop series are open to Cadettes in 5th-8th grade and will take place virtually.

The first workshop series, held June 22 & 24 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., is the Virtual Cadette Mining in Today’s World Patch Workshop. Cadettes will have the opportunity to earn GSSN’s Mining in Today's World patch by completing the two-day workshop in which they will explore the world of mining and its importance in the modern world through fun, hands-on activities. The Mining in Today’s World patch program was made possible through a grant from the Nevada Mining Association.

The second workshop series, held June 22 & 24 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., is the Virtual Cadette Space Science Researcher Badge Workshop. Cadettes will have the opportunity to work towards earning their Space Science Researcher badge by completing this two-day workshop series in which they will explore the properties of light and learn how light is used to make discoveries about the universe.

“By engaging with industry and educational partners within the Mackay School and the mining industry here in Nevada, I hope that young women become more aware of the STEM educational and career opportunities that Nevada has to offer,” Annie Huhta, Director of the Mackay School, said. “Also as part of this series we are inviting female experts in STEM careers to interact with these young women, to share their stories of challenge and success in the hopes that workshop participants will be able to see themselves as contributors to the future of STEM here in Nevada.”

The cost of each of the workshop series is $15/girl. To register, visit www.gssn.org/events. Registration ends June 6

The Mackay School and GSSN would also like to recognize and thank Nevada Mining Association, Nevada Gold Mines, and NevadaTeach for partnering to bring the workshop series to life.
