Can I join as an independent Girl Scout?

Yes! Earn badges, go camping, and more on your own schedule.

You can absolutely join Girl Scouts by yourself. This type of membership is known as an Individually Registered Member (IRM). Individually registered members are also known as Juliettes, named after our founder, Juliette Gordon Low. Juliettes choose how to participate based on their schedule and interests.

Joining as a Juliette is great for Girl Scouts without a troop available nearby or who want to enjoy Girl Scout programming with their family. They can get started right away by earning badges independently or attending events to meet other Girl Scouts in their area.

Badges signify that a Girl Scout completed all the steps needed to earn this recognition for the new skills they learned. Each badge takes a Girl Scout through the steps of learning about the skill, practicing, and demonstrating it. Badge topics range from the outdoors to STEM, or art, and even career exploration. They’re a great way to try something new and see if you enjoy it.

Once a badge is earned, it is sewn or ironed onto a sash or vest. A Girl Scout can earn new badges as they progress through each level, with activities becoming more challenging as they move up.

Love being outdoors? Follow your passion and sign up for weekend camping trips as a Juliette. Camp as often as you want and meet other Girl Scouts who share your enthusiasm for the great outdoors.

Expand your horizons by spending a week at camp in the summer or exploring local state parks. As a Cadette, Senior, or Ambassador (grades 6–12), you can even explore the United States—or the world!—by traveling to other Girl Scout camps.

Be a boss and start your own business by participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Juliettes can sell cookies in a structure supported by our council.

Not only will you earn funds to put toward fun Girl Scout activities, but you’ll also help ensure Girl Scouting is possible for other members just like you.

Earn Girl Scouting's Highest Awards

The Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards are the highest awards in Girl Scouting. Juliettes can earn these awards by leading a take-action project to improve their local community.

Travel the country—maybe even the world

Juliettes can experience leadership opportunities and cross-cultural understanding through regional, national, and international travel.

Explore your interests through series and events

Juliettes can meet other girls in their area while participating council-sponsored events. Service Units also offer many events and service opportunities, which are great for Juliettes to meet other Girl Scouts in their area.

Help Others Through Community Service

Part of the Girl Scout Law is to “make the world a better place”. Juliettes can work on their own or with their Girl Scout community to pass along what they’ve learned, gain leadership skills, and earn special mentoring awards by helping younger Girl Scouts at troop meetings, events, camp, and more.

Participate in the Fall Product Program

Juliettes can fund their Girl Scout activities while learning great business skills including goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. Learn more about the Fall Product Program.

What is a Juliette Girl Scout Advisor?

A Girl Scout Juliette Advisor is a parent or trusted adult who guides a Juliette through her experience. A Mentor should:

Register as an adult member of Girl Scouts.
Seek out and relay information and opportunities for their girl.
Help their girl plan her Girl Scout year using the Planning Guides.
Connect with their service unit team for wider opportunities for their girl.
Follow Volunteer Essentials and Safety Activity Checkpoints to keep their girl safe.
Connect with other Advisors in their service unit.
